What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is a condition that needs immediate attention to stop severe pain, manage trauma, or prevent serious infection. This includes:

Severe dental pain that does not respond to pain relief

Swelling of the face, mouth, or neck that is getting worse or affecting breathing/swallowing Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth following trauma or surgery

Dental trauma, such as a knocked-out or displaced tooth

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, please contact us as soon as the practice opens (see our opening hours) for triage. If your condition meets the emergency criteria, you may be offered a same-day appointment in our emergency clinic.

These emergency slots cannot be booked in advance—you must call on the day.

Important Information for Patients

Our phone lines can be busy first thing in the morning—please bear with us.

You can also contact us by email at

In some situations, we may provide self-help advice or pain management guidance over the phone, depending on your symptoms.

If your concern does not meet the emergency criteria, we will offer the next available appointment and add you to our priority list—meaning we’ll contact you if a cancellation becomes available sooner.
